Roblox vs Fortnite Compared

Roblox vs Fortnite Compared

Ask a kid these days what game they’d like to play, and the chances are one of the two games in this post will be the first name out of their mouths. There is a strong possibility that they will mention either Fortnite or Roblox, two of the biggest free-to-play games in existence. Both are phenomenal for players of all ages while also offering experiences far beyond the normal game modes. That is why I am excited to pit these two against one another in this Roblox vs Fortnite compared guide.

The aim here is to determine which of these two games is ultimately the better one for you. This is going to be one of the hardest comparisons I’ve ever done since I adore both of these games and cover them for our parent company, Venture 4th Media. I play Roblox and Fortnite weekly with family and friends, and they are near and dear to my heart. But there has to be a winner in the end. I have come up with that winner in this Roblox vs Fortnite compared guide.

Bottom Line Up Front

Roblox and Fortnite come from distinct backgrounds but, ultimately, have similar goals and methods of attracting players. Roblox began as a tool for players to make their own games and share them online. On the other hand, Fortnite started life as a survival-building game that branched out into the most significant battle royale game on the planet. But they both inevitably dived into the creator side, allowing anyone to make and share experiences with others. They also have a deep connection regarding being free-to-play and offering a ton of cosmetics for players to purchase.

Main Differences Between Roblox and Fortnite

There are a few key differences that you need to know about when it comes to Roblox and Fortnite before we start. Though there are some surprising similarities between the two, some vital details separate the two and keep them apart from one another. Here they are:

  • Roblox is only available for mobile, PC, and Xbox, whereas Fortnite is available on mobile, PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
  • Roblox is entirely free-to-play (with minor exceptions), whereas Fortnite is only free when it comes to battle royale and Creative. Players have to spend money on Save the World.
  • Roblox began its life as a creator tool for sharing player-made video games, whereas Fortnite started its life as a survival-building game and later battle royale experience.
  • Roblox has some games that operate on seasonal passes, whereas everything in Fortnite is based on the seasons and battle passes that it offers.
  • Roblox is a platform for many games, including battle royale-style experiences, whereas Fortnite is a primarily battle royale game with the ability to play other player-made adventures if you want.

Graphics

Roblox

roblox vs Fortnite Compared

Graphics are going to be where Roblox struggles the most out of the categories that I used to determine the winner of this bout. Roblox came out in the first decade of the 2000s, which is approaching its 20th anniversary in the coming years.

As such, the graphics are what you might call outdated. Though there have been improvements over the years, and games generally look better than they did when I first played Roblox in 2016, it is still far from the graphical fidelity of games that came out during that time.

It is hard to nail down visuals for Roblox, though, when you have games that look so vastly different. Older titles like Royale High try to be gorgeous and cutesy but honestly have some dated graphics. On the other hand, more recent games like Journey to the Sun are brilliantly stunning and push the boundaries of what a Roblox game can look like. However, they are few and far between.

Fortnite

Fortnite Graphics

On the other hand, Fortnite is a much more recent game. Releasing first in 2017, it came out arguably with dated graphics in its own way. I remember playing it the first day it came out and thinking how it looked like a game from the PS3 days, despite coming out on the PS4.

However, what I love about Epic Games is that they have consistently improved Fortnite and how the game looks today is many times better than it did on the first day. Even most recently, it made the jump to Unreal Engine 5, and the difference is night and day.

There is so much detail to the backgrounds now, the performance is stellar on newer hardware, and the colors are so rich and deep. What impresses the most about Fortnite’s graphics is the lighting, which is brilliant and able to capture all hours of the day nicely.

My Takeaway

When it comes to the winner in terms of graphics, Fortnite is the clear victor here. Roblox can’t overcome the outdated nature of its graphics. Even though Fortnite started out in a poor spot graphically, it has improved so much to look like one of the best free-to-play games today. And while I appreciate Roblox’s visual variation over Fortnite, I would prefer to look at the beautiful vistas that Epic Games has created any day.

Gameplay

Roblox

Roblox Gameplay

The gameplay for Roblox is hard to nail, which is the beauty of the entire game. One minute, you could hop into a game where you are mowing down waves of zombies in a first-person shooter experience and then roleplaying at high school while dressing up in Adopt Me the next minute.

The gameplay variation in Roblox is unlike any other game out there. Not even the other similar titles that boast player-created experiences can’t even touch what Roblox has to offer. In fact, do you want a Fortnite-like game but struggle to play it on iOS? No problem, as you can boot up Island Royale or any other similar experience and play a decent game there.

To be fair, not all Roblox experiences are created equal, and there are a lot of unfortunate ones out there that are duds not worth your time. Thankfully, the home page and featured games are generally decent, while we always strive to recommend only the best. So, it doesn’t take long to find some of the best gameplay experiences around that show the strengths of Roblox.

Fortnite

Fortnite Gameplay

Fortnite has relatively straightforward gameplay. It’s a third-person shooter with building elements where you can create whatever you want to survive against zombies or other players. The gameplay loop is simple enough to grasp, which is why players of all ages enjoy it.

What I will say about Fortnite is that its gameplay is slightly more limited than what you find in Roblox. Sure, there are many different experiences than shooting games here, like horror experiences, narrative-focused adventures, and platforming gameplay.

But it is restricted to the general systems that Epic Games has in place for Fortnite. I admire the ingenuity of the community in coming up with workarounds like creating an Among Us-like game mode, for instance, or a 3D take on Five Nights at Freddy’s. Like Roblox, though, the gameplay for these isn’t nearly as deep as the core Fortnite modes.

My Takeaway

While I appreciate that Fortnite tried to do the Roblox formula of offering countless different gameplay experiences for you to enjoy, they all pale in comparison to what Roblox has done. Sure, the core third-person shooter gameplay in Fortnite is better than any inspired game in Roblox, but it is also somewhat restrictive. There are far more intriguing and generally good-quality gameplay types to find in Roblox, so I have to give it the slight edge for this one.

Progression/Cosmetics

Roblox

Roblox vs Fortnite Progression Cosmetics

Roblox is a bit of a mess when it comes to its progression and cosmetics. These are crucial for determining the loop that a game has and bringing players back to keep playing it. For the progression side, this is rough since every Roblox experience is different from one another.

You have games, on the one hand, like Murder Mystery 2, where there are levels, currency, and seasonal passes that grant you more cosmetics. But then you have popular games like Natural Disaster Survival, where it is extremely fun to play, but there are no levels, currency, or any real reason to keep playing other than fun.

Cosmetics are a bit more standardized as Roblox itself has plenty of cosmetics for you to customize your avatar, and the different characters I’ve seen are insanely unique. Plus, other games add cosmetics in of their own that help to make your avatar feel wholly your own, even if they still don’t always look the best.

Fortnite

Roblox vs Fortnite Progression Cosmetics

On the other hand, Fortnite is the progenitor of the modern-day cosmetic and progression systems. There is no game that has nailed these down as well as Epic Games’ battle royale star. The season pass system that most modern multiplayer service games have today? You can thank Fortnite for that.

Every season, Fortnite breaks records and tries something new, be it crossovers with surprising franchises or events that offer new features for players to check out. This ties into progression, too, giving you new reasons to level up every season and unlock more cosmetics.

Speaking of cosmetics, there is no game that does it quite as well as Fortnite. When you have characters like All Might from My Hero Academia trading blows with Iron Man, who’s teaming up with Ariana Grande, there truly is no comparison. Fortnite is the best game at bringing players back for more action.

My Takeaway

Is there even a contest here? I appreciate that Roblox has such varied levels of progression across its games. If you want a game that isn’t deep and takes no thinking at all, there is that. But if you want something deep that will last you hundreds of hours, it’s there, too. But this inconsistency, especially in cosmetics, is what makes Fortnite shine more.

It is constantly adding more and more seasons and cosmetics for players to check out. Even better, it has some of the best skins that you will ever find in any game ever. Without a doubt, this is Fortnite’s realm, and Roblox can’t even touch it in this category.

Content

Roblox

Roblox vs Fortnite Content

Content is where both of these games shine, particularly in the case of Roblox. The entire premise of the game is to offer players the chance to check out any type of game they want. You could wake up one day and go: “hey, I want to play a zombie game in Roblox.”

And trust me; there will be plenty of quality options for you to check out. In the same vein, you could wake up one day on the opposite end of the spectrum and think that you might want to play a game where you date people and hang out with others at school. Trust me, there are plenty of those, too.

If there is a concept or genre you are interested in, chances are that it exists in Roblox and likely with some decent quality to boot. Like Pokemon games? There are some solid copycats and games like it. Prefer to check out games where it is all about fashion? You can strut your stuff down the runway in multiple Roblox experiences.

The content is unbelievable and unparalleled when it comes to Roblox. And that is just in finding games to check out. Many of the actual games themselves are chocked full of content and depth for you to enjoy. The best part about all of it? You don’t have to spend a penny to enjoy any of these games in the slightest.

Fortnite

Roblox Fortnite Content

Fortnite is in a similar position to Roblox when it comes to content. You are certainly not starved for gameplay and experiences when it comes to Epic Games’ massively popular battle royale title. There is the bulk of the game with Save the World and battle royale, which offer cooperative and competitive multiplayer experiences, respectively.

But then there is Creative, which is akin to Roblox. You can build whatever you want and share it online. Through this, I have seen some horror games, puzzle games, Among Us-style games, and more. The variety offered here is impressive, especially given that Fortnite is a shooter game.

While I appreciate the variety that is about as close as a game can get to something like Roblox, it honestly pales in comparison to the amount of content that Roblox has. Sure, you could argue that the tightness of Epic Games’ official modes and events is unmatched; they are also restrictive in gameplay, not being as accessible to everyone.

My Takeaway

Overall, I would have to say that Roblox is the winner in this category. Both games offer a ton of content for players to enjoy, but only one has it on the level and variety of Roblox. The core content in Fortnite is fantastic and generally of higher quality than what is found in Roblox, but it is severely limited. I would rather spend more hours with games in Roblox than Fortnite, where I would prefer to do a few matches and then get bored.

Which Game Is Better?

As you can see, we are pretty much at an impasse when it comes to which of the two games is better between Fortnite and Roblox. While I will say that the winners mostly dominated some categories, others were close. Honestly, the winner between the two changes for me day by day.

One day, I might be all over Fortnite because of a new season or limited-time event and not even touch Roblox for a bit. On the other hand, there might come one day when I am all over Roblox because Fortnite is getting stale with the current season and what’s available.

So, my answer changes pretty often. That said, I would say that my overall answer the majority of the time is Roblox. While I adore Fortnite and will continue to play it weekly like Roblox, I have so much more fun for extended periods of time in Roblox.

On Fortnite, I’ll get in there with family and play a few matches, then maybe some Team Deathmatch in a Creative mode version of Tilted Towers. But after an hour at best, I’m already ready to move on to the next game. With Roblox, on the other hand, I would play it all day if I wanted to and not get bored.

I might play a few matches of Disaster Island, dress up with my family member and do a pageant in Royale High, watch some people make fools of themselves in Rap Battles, run pizza deliveries in Bloxburg for an hour while listening to a podcast, and then grind a few levels in Swordburst 2.

The variety of experiences is far more intriguing in Roblox; I can spend more time playing it. For this fun factor alone, I have to give it to Roblox. Fortnite is a close competitor, though, and maybe someday, with the right changes and improvements, it could surpass Roblox.

Best Alternatives

roblox alternative Minecraft

Fortnite and Roblox offer all of the gameplay that you need for absolutely nothing. There are honestly no other games you, technically, need to play for the rest of your life with these two. But I get it. I like to play other games when I get bored with them.

If you are bored with Roblox and Fortnite right now, here are a few games that remind me of these two. You can’t go wrong with these experiences. I have noted what I think they are similar to, why you should play them, and what you need to know about the gameplay and content involved with the game.

  • Minecraft: The entire premise of the game to mine blocks for materials to craft with seems complicated. It certainly gets deep when you get into red stone and all that, but the general idea of Minecraft is simple enough for anyone to enjoy. Unlike Fortnite and Roblox at times, Minecraft is a game that can be enjoyed alone, and I have had more fun with it by myself than those other games. But it excels in multiplayer, too, in the player-created servers and game modes, similar to Roblox and Fortnite.
  • Fall Guys: The idea is a battle royale-style situation where you have dozens of players in a single lobby who are chasing each other across obstacle courses and minigames to survive to the next round until a single person wins. There are plenty of courses and minigames to explore in Fall Guys, and while both Fortnite and Roblox have tried to replicate it in the past, there is nothing like this free-to-play game.
  • Apex Legends: I’ll be the first to admit that I have never liked the building in Fortnite, which is why I stick to Zero Build modes. However, the battle royale game where I love its gimmick is Apex Legends. Having these Overwatch-style heroes who can use powers like gravity attacks or healing teammates is fantastic. It helps, too, that the first-person gunplay is terrific at the same time.
  • Garry’s Mod: If you want one of the simplest and best multiplayer party modes around, this is the game to check out. It sure isn’t as deep as Roblox in terms of user-created experiences or even Fortnite for that matter, but it’s worth exploring for the best Prop Hunt game around, plus some other intriguing experiences.
  • Among Us: Among Us took the world by storm, to the point where both Roblox and Fortnite tried their hands at copying its formula. It is a detective killer game where there is a murderer (or two or three) who is trying to secretly eliminate everyone on the ship without getting caught, while the survivors try to stay alive. It’s one of the most riveting free multiplayer games out there.

Which Roblox Games to Play First

As mentioned, there is a winner that I have come up with for the true challenge of Roblox versus Fortnite. Sure, we are a Roblox site, but I am a giant Fortnite fan. In the end, though, the allure of the varied experiences in Roblox makes it much more fun for me to play.

But it can be a little bit overwhelming trying to figure out what Roblox games to play. Though the featured page on Roblox is generally pretty good, it occasionally shows you some duds. If you want to know about the best games in Roblox, we’ve got you covered with different games to check out, depending on your genre preferences.
